I was due in Medellin, Colombia, this past weekend. My mom, who started writing 20 years ago, launched her fourth book —a romance novel called Elena Sin H— loosely based on the true story of a marxist nun (the rector of my mom’s school) who joined the guerrilla in Colombia, and all the lovers she had throughout her life. One of which was a famous chief from the ELN who gave out orders to have her assassinated for mistakenly thinking that she had betrayed him. I wanted to go, to be there with her celebrating this tremendous milestone. Then Trump and Petro (the Colombian president) got into it and the fear crept in. Things got horrible for Colombians at airports the few days that followed.

Sarah’s eyes went wide reading the news. Panic molding her expression with the thought of my upcoming travels. My trip was scheduled for the week after and even though a week is an eternity right now, we weren’t sure how bad it would get.
